An Amtrak train traveling from Los Angeles, California, to Chicago, Illinois, derailed Monday following colliding with a truck at a railroad crossing in Mendon, rural Missouri.
There were 243 passengers aboard the train when the accident occurred around 1:40 p.m. Central Time. Several were injured, but it was not known how many and their condition, Amtrak spokeswoman Kimberly Woods said.
At least three people were taken to Columbia University Hospital, hospital spokesman Eric Maze said.
“It’s a terrible situation, I can say that. Several cars derailed. We think there might be fatalities, but it’s still too early. I’m still getting information,” said Governor Mike Parson.
Mendon is regarding 115 miles northeast of Kansas City.
Emergency teams have rushed to the area and are providing aid to the affected people, local authorities said.
“Amtrak is aware of the incident and is working with local authorities…we are experiencing longer wait times, but if you need immediate assistance please call 1-800-USA-RAIL.
The incident comes a day following the derailment of another train in California that collided with a car. Three people died.
Social media posts showed several train cars on their sides and many of the passengers in the field around the tracks.
