The labor market situation is expected to remain stable

Vienna (OTS) – The number of people registered as unemployed by the AMS Vienna increased by 7.4 percent year-on-year to 124,764 in December 2023, and the number of AMS customers in training increased by 5.1 percent to 33,992. The sum of both groups has increased by 6.9 percent.

Year-on-year, the number of people over 50 who are unemployed or in training grew by 1.9 percent, and that of people under 25 by 10.4 percent.

Looking at key sectors, unemployment in December rose year-on-year in construction by 7.6 percent and in goods production by 9.7 percent, in retail it rose by 4.3 percent and in hotels and restaurants by 9.4 percent .

The Vienna AMS boss Winfried Göschl expects the labor market situation to remain stable this year. “I firmly assume that employment in Vienna will continue to rise in 2024 – whether unemployment tends to move up or down will depend heavily on how the workforce potential develops.” This depends on several factors, for example on immigration to Vienna and on the female employment rate.

Göschl does not believe that the crisis in construction will deepen. “Many projects were postponed due to the price explosion, but not canceled,” the AMS Vienna boss is convinced. “A lot of public funds will continue to flow into projects in the interests of sustainability and the energy transition.” These include, for example, facade renovations or heating replacements.

Retailers will also ultimately benefit from the high levels of agreement reached in the KV negotiations and the abolition of cold progression, says Göschl.

However, there is one group of job seekers that continues to worry Göschl: “The job market remains difficult for those with low qualifications – especially those who lack any ability to pursue training. We will pay particular attention to them this year.”
