The physiotherapist from Rio Grande do Sul Stefanie Malinski, 27, is among these people and one of her daily habits is checking the battery level of the prosthesis she uses in place of her left leg. In this way, she commented:
On days when I demand more from the prosthesis, the battery lasts less than on days when I don’t demand as much from it. By cell phone it is possible to monitor this performance and have more control.
One of the companies that works with prostheses is the German Ottobock and the physiotherapist uses the company’s C-Leg knee. In addition to the product, the brand also provides an application where it is possible to monitor the charge level, in addition to being able to adapt functions according to the person’s daily needs.
Stefanie can also access three functions of her prosthesis: the resistance of the equipment, the battery level and the count of steps taken with it. Thus, she explains that adding an app along with the item allows for a greater sense of control throughout the day.
When she visits Ottobock’s clinic, in Porto Alegre (RS), the physiotherapist’s prosthesis is adjusted to operate according to her needs. Including, it can even switch between three modes of operation of the equipment, namely: basic, bicycle and table tennis. Obviously, it doesn’t mean that she actually plays the sport, but it’s a function that can be useful.
The app is also available for other company apps and can be downloaded for both Android and iOS. Finally, also check out the tests of prosthetic eyes made with 3D printing and equipment developed by scientists that can work with artificial intelligence.
