Amputated penis after a medical error, a father “disgusted” by the compensation he will receive

A man had to have his penis completely amputated following cancer was discovered in the penis. “Wrongful breaches” on the part of the Nantes hospital were established by the courts and the CHU was ordered to pay compensation to the patient well below what he had requested.

This father of three children is living a real nightmare… Suffering from cancer in the penis, this 30-year-old had his penis completely amputated, following a medical error. And while he claimed 976,000 euros from the Nantes University Hospital to repair this damage, the courts ruled by evaluating it at just over 61,000 euros, according to West France.

“I wanted to cut it myself”

When the man was diagnosed at the age of 30, he was treated at the Nantes University Hospital. The tumor is removed by a urologist but, as our colleagues explain, the search for the sentinel lymph node not having been done, the cancer has recurred, causing excruciating pain. “I was completely crazy, there was even a moment when I wanted to cut it myself. It was my wife who stopped me. I had the cutter, Betadine, and I was preparing my thing in the garage!”, he confided to France Blue Loire Ocean. The father then decided to seek another opinion and turned to Hospices Civils de Lyon. The conclusion is clear: the man must have his penis removed. And the ablation takes place in 2017.

Five years later, an expert report which concluded that the Nantes urologist had made an error convinced the judges who followed the analysis which had revealed “wrongful shortcomings” in the treatment of “squamous cell carcinoma” detected in August 2014 , according to our colleagues. “I’m really devastated and it’s really shameful,” reacted the “disgusted” man, who had asked for nearly a million euros and will only receive 61,000 euros. One thing is certain, he will appeal the decision.
