Halo European Tour 2023: AMORPHIS, SOLSTAFIR, LOST SOCIETY  @ Posthof, Linz (11.11.2023)

AMORPHIS have been inspiring fans of dark metal for decades and were able to convince both critics and fans with their current work “Halo”. Of course, the whole thing has to be experienced live and so the Finns went together with their compatriots LOST SOCIETY as well as the Icelander from SUN LETTERS went on an extensive European tour and also stopped at the Linz Posthof.

As is usual for the Posthof, everyone started on time and the up-and-coming gentlemen from were already there at 7 p.m LOST SOCIETY on the stage. Actually founded as a classic thrash band, it soon became clear that the guys wanted more and so the focus on the last works was on more modern fare, which is why the Finns were able to not only give a tight but also quite varied opener. Apart from fronter Samy Elbanna, who was dressed in a leather suit, the band came on stage in partner looks, i.e. the same shirt, and immediately got going. At the first thrash piece the mood was already good and Samy heated the crowd up even more. The musicians repeatedly jumped onto podiums, posed and were generally happy to move. With short but grateful announcements, the frontman cut a solid figure even outside of singing and took off more and more clothes as the gig progressed. The modern anthem “Awake” caused another storm of cheers, which was only drowned out by the final “Stitches”. LOST SOCIETY are an up-and-coming, motivated and strong (live) band that we will definitely hear a lot more from in the future, that was definitely clear following this evening.

In keeping with the cold and rainy weather, the gentlemen from… SUN LETTERS act as the second heater of the evening. The Icelanders’ ponderous and dark psychedelic alternative post-metal created a good atmosphere with its powerful sound. But the northerners are probably not the best choice for really going crazy. With a drink in your hand, you listened to songs like “Fjara” from the 2011 album “Svartir Sandar” or the almost ten-minute “Ótta” while gently tapping along. The expansive song invited people to dream and immediately got under their skin, until following regarding six minutes the musicians changed the mood once more and made their eyes shine even brighter. Fantastic number that showed what great musicians Aðalbjörn Tryggvason and his three colleagues are. The singer also didn’t shy away from contact with the audience. Thanks to the help of the fans, Aðalbjörn balanced along the barrier and hit people.

Finally, the worthy finale was heralded with “Goddess Of The Ages”. After a short farewell, people quickly ran away to get some strength or to get some fresh air. Solid performance by the four gentlemen from the Isle of Sheep.

Just in time for the start of ARMORPHIS The large hall in the sold-out Posthof filled up and not a single seat remained free. Tomi Joutsen and his band were greeted frenetically before playing “Northwards” from their latest work „Halo“, which rightly stormed the European charts last year, started the successful set. As expected, a lot of attention was paid to the newest baby and so it was immediately followed by “On The Dark Waters”, and a little later one of the biggest catchy tunes of recent years with “The Moon”. The balanced mix of growls and clear vocals from Tomi ensure the usual heaviness of AMORPHIS and leave space to breathe in between and give the musicians more space to develop. Anyone who has been loyal to the band for a long time will have noticed that the singer’s voice has developed incredibly and was able to provide this variety in the songs.

Not only were the ears spoiled that evening, but the eyes weren’t neglected either. Five rectangular video walls in the background provided the perfect visual accompaniment to the individual songs thanks to color changes. The large banner in the background also changed color once more and once more thanks to the light show and was an eye-catcher.

The program continued with “Thousand Lakes” from the band’s early days, specifically from 1994, where a certain Tomi Koivusaari was at the microphone and sang on the album. But back to now and today where front man Tomi Joutsen has been part of the inventory for almost 20 years and had a very strong day vocally. Almost following every song, the likeable Finn interacted with the fans present and chatted away.

With “Black Winter Day” there was female support from the video wall, before attention was paid to two songs from the 2009 album “Skyforger” with “Silver Bride” and “Sky Is Mine”. The song selection can be described as very successful, as they delivered songs from over three decades. During “My Kantele” all band members were able to introduce themselves in a very special way, as each musician played a famous piece from music history on their instrument before the rest of the band and the fans joined in. The legends of BLACK SABBATH, AC/DC and DEEP PURPLE mightn’t be missing.

The Bee

The concert went by far too quickly and AMORPHIS said goodbye backstage to take a quick breather before storming back onto the stage for the obligatory encore. However, this only consisted of a single song, “The Bee” was sung along obediently and the atmosphere might be described as good, but not exuberant. What it was, I have no idea, but not the band, they gave their best and hopefully not for the last time in the state capital. Metal or rock concerts in the Posthof work excellently and hopefully the dry spell is over. Can I have some more, please.
