Today, Tuesday, April 25, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director of the Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa, Aya Majzoub, called on the Lebanese authorities to “stop the illegal deportations of Syrian refugees.”

“Majzoub” warned that the deported Syrians would be subjected to “torture or persecution” by the Syrian government upon their return to their country, which is witnessing war, stressing the need not to return any refugee to a place where his life would be in danger.

In a statement published by Amnesty International, the official mentioned the expulsion of dozens of refugees who illegally entered Lebanon, or who carried expired residency papers, following raids on their homes by the Lebanese army.

In particular, the organization relied on the statements of Muhammad, the brother of one of the expelled refugees, who said that these refugees were “taken directly to the border and handed over to the Syrian army.”

Aya Majzoub added, “It is very disturbing to see the army decide the fate of refugees, without respecting guarantees through a legal procedure.”

“Instead of living in fear, refugees living in Lebanon must be protected from arbitrary raids and illegal deportation,” she added.

Majzoub’s call comes following the Lebanese authorities deported some 50 Syrians back to their country in April, amid rising anti-Syrian sentiment, exacerbated by the economic crisis.
