Amnesty International calls on the European Union to impose sanctions on Israel

London – Amnesty International called on the European Union, on Wednesday, to impose sanctions on Israel, and demanded that it abide by the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice in this regard.

This came in a letter sent by the organization to the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, and the foreign ministers of the EU member states.

The organization explained that the supply of weapons and equipment to Israel and trade and investment with illegal Israeli settlements violate the European Union’s obligations under international law.

It also called on the Union to ensure that the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice issued on 19 July 2024 is translated into effective policies that would end Israel’s violations of international law.

The organization indicated in its letter that the court recalled that the continued Israeli presence in the occupied Palestinian territories is illegal, and that Israel is obligated to end its illegal presence, immediately cease all new settlement activities, evacuate all settlers and compensate for the resulting damages.

The letter also stressed that the Court had recognized that all States were legally obligated not to recognize the situation resulting from the illegal Israeli presence in the occupied Palestinian territory, and called for not providing assistance or support to maintain the situation resulting from the Israeli presence there.

With American support, Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza since October 7, leaving more than 134,000 dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, amid massive destruction and deadly famine.

In contempt of the international community, Israel continues this war, ignoring the UN Security Council resolution to stop it immediately, and the International Court of Justice’s orders to take measures to prevent acts of genocide and to improve the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza.
