Amnesty International has called on Lebanese MPs and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to end the abuse of women in Parliament.
The organization said in a statement, today (Wednesday), via its Twitter account: “The representatives, and specifically its president, Nabih Berri, bear the responsibility to end this abuse of women and stop encouraging a hostile environment for women.”
She added, “It is shameful that female MPs in the Lebanese Parliament, especially those who criticize the authorities, are subjected to harassment by their male counterparts and the Speaker himself, simply because they are women in a parliament dominated by men.”
“The House of Representatives should respect human rights and implement the 2020 law criminalizing harassment,” she added.
It is noteworthy that Representative Cynthia Zarazir had announced yesterday, through social media and the media, following the end of the parliament session, that since her entry into the House of Representatives, she has not received any respect, “which indicates that those I will be with for 4 years are human beings first and respectable people second.” ».
She pointed out that she is subjected to “the defamation of the representatives of the authority whose masculinity outweighs their manhood.” She is also being bullied over her family’s name.
In a statement today, the General Secretariat of the House of Representatives denied what Zarazir had reported through the media and social media, stressing that it was “totally incorrect.”
And she said, “In her performance and that of her administrative, legal, moral and behavioral employees, they do not distinguish between any of the deputies.” She stressed, that all of Zarazir’s words “other than that are slander and denial of the truth,” calling on her to stay away from “incitement, mobilization and populism.”
