Three STIB (Société des transports intercommunaux de Bruxelles) agents were attacked on Sunday around 3:00 p.m. in the De Brouckère metro station, located in the center of Brussels.
These station security patrollers were attacked by a single person. He projected a liquid in their direction that was more than likely ammonia.
One of the STIB agents was hit in the clothing. The other two were more seriously affected. The three men were taken to hospital to undergo follow-up examinations.
The attacker was able to be intercepted on site by police officers from the SPC, the railway police, which is in charge of the Brussels metro network.
The man who attacked the three patrol officers has yet to be identified. It appears to be a homeless person.
This is not the first time that ammonia attacks have been committed in the Brussels metro. A union source reports four attacks of this type during this year.
One, committed on August 5, particularly left its mark. When a metro train stopped at Delacroix station in Anderlecht, a man leaving the metro threw a bottle containing a liquid into the carriage. It later emerged that it was ammonia. The individuals involved were two thieves, who had used ammonia to create a diversion and facilitate their crime. Two people were then hospitalized for respiratory and eye problems.
Ammonia is regularly used by drug addicts to enhance their cocaine and achieve the effect of crack. Converting cocaine into crack produces three times as much of the drug. Crack is therefore cheaper but more addictive than cocaine.
