An attack using ammonia was committed against three STIB employees on Sunday afternoon at the De Brouckère metro station, the Brussels prosecutor’s office confirmed. The suspect was charged with intentional assault and battery.

Railway police were called to the attack shortly before 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 1. According to the facts indicated by the prosecution, three STIB security agents asked a homeless woman to leave the metro station. After refusing, the woman allegedly took out a bottle containing a liquid resembling ammonia, which she threw in the direction of the security guards. Two of them received the substance in the face, one of them also in the mouth. The third security guard received the substance on him after attempting to restrain the woman.

The three STIB employees were transported to hospital for treatment, and were able to leave the hospital the same day. Two of them were unable to work for five and three days respectively, and the third security guard left the hospital after remaining under observation for a few hours.

The suspect was questioned and made available to the Brussels public prosecutor’s office. An investigating judge was requested as well as a psychiatric assessment of the suspect. The investigating judge decided to place her under arrest warrant and charged her with intentional assault and battery resulting in incapacity for work against public transport agents.
