How will the Government obtain the money so that Mexicans can retire with 100 percent of their last salary? President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) has already launched a proposal: shave the National Institute of Transparency, Access to Information and Protection of Personal Data (INAI).
“There are still many unproductive structures, all those created to protect corruption (…). Imagine, the Transparency Institute, it costs a billion to maintain it, why don’t those billion go to the pension fund? I’m putting an example,” he said.
In that sense, he said that the Government will propose a measure of “greater republican austerity” to promote its labor reform in terms of pensions.
“We are going to obtain the part that corresponds to us because we are going to propose more republican austerity, that is, because we started with an austerity plan, it helped us a lot, but we think we can still save more“he indicated.
And on February 5, the federal president will present a labor reform initiative regarding pensions in which the Government is expected to assume a part of the funds.
“For the peace of mind of businessmen and workers, especially businessmen, so that they are not frightened, the Government is going to assume a considerable part of this imbalance,” he announced on January 15, 2024.

President López Obrador said that this correction to the pension system will be gradual and may take between 5 and 15 years.
“We sent an initiative for the Government to help gradually correct this injustice (…) so it may take 5, 10, 15 years, but we are going to correct this injustice,” he said.
At the beginning of 2024, the head of the Executive announced that he plans to send said counter-reform to the Pension Law promoted in 1997, when Ernesto Zedillo was president of Mexico, since under the regime of Law 97, the new generations – mostly millennials– they will receive “if they do well, half their salary” upon retirement.
