The confrontation between President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego, president of Grupo Salinas, escalated.

Yesterday the director of the Tax Administration Service (SAT), Antonio Martínez Dagnino, reported that four companies belonging to the owner of TV Azteca owe 63 billion pesos in the payment of taxes to the Public Treasury, following Salinas Pliego, in a video , rejected that his companies refuse to pay taxes and denounced that the SAT seeks to extort him. In addition, he stressed, the government might be stealing up to 50 billion pesos through the pension program for seniors.

Noting that this is not a personal matter, President López Obrador called on Salinas Pliego that if he has evidence or thinks that the government wants to “extort” him because the government is corrupt, “the only thing I would ask him is to present the evidence, and if you present it we act.

“In my case, what I consider most important in my life is honesty, but if he maintains that there is corruption in the government and that he has the evidence… He spoke regarding the management of Welfare programs, particularly for older adults. “Where is the evidence?” the President asked.

He reproached that his opponents say that they pay taxes, but “in their talks” they maintain that the fiscal problem is the informal economy that does not pay taxes, “because there is a lot of hypocrisy in conservatism.”

The businessman reacted through his X account. “A good government is accountable, it does not demand proof from citizens, it acts! A bad government protects crime and then demands proof from victims,” he said. In the same message, he pointed out that criminals and thieves last as long as the victims and oppressed allow it.

The President announced that on the website of the government of the Republic he will make public all the documents and evidence that show the debt of the companies of Salinas Pliego, not with the purpose of affecting, but rather of preventing the forgiveness of taxes for large companies and eradicating the corruption.

In response to the businessman, Martínez Dagnino assured for his part that the agency has always done its work in accordance with the law. He explained that Grupo Salinas’ debts are concentrated in four companies.

“In 17 trials and all were audits between 2008 and 2018. All of these debts were observed by the SAT for an amount [original] of 38 billion pesos, but with the update, inflation and surcharges it amounts to 53 billion pesos”, while for tax credits in the current administration 10 billion pesos are owed, which results in a debt of 63 billion pesos,” he said.

The former tax attorney and current Undersecretary of Human Rights of the Interior, Félix Arturo Medina, recalled that Salinas companies have challenged and delayed the issuance of a final ruling that would force them to pay their taxes.

“The company filed an amparo lawsuit that a collegiate court tried to resolve in 2021; However, the corporation itself prevented this by requesting the SCJN to exercise its exceptional power of attraction, which temporarily suspended the resolution of the matter,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Fiscal Attorney of the Federation, Grisel Galeano García, indicated that Grupo Salinas uses as a strategy “customary interpretations” of the law to justify supposed compliance with its tax obligations. Furthermore, in the procedures and controversies they promote, they interpose resources or means of evidence that are unnecessary, with the aim of delaying the resolution of the issues.

He trusted that the collegiate courts would agree with them.
