AMLO highlights “democratic exercise” of the referendum in Uruguay

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador highlighted this Monday (28) the “exercise democratic” of the referendum Uruguaywhere the citizens chose this Sunday to keep the Law for Urgent Consideration (LUC) of the Government in a tight vote.

López Obrador, who has already promoted several “popular consultations”, referred to the historic referendum in which more than 2.6 million Uruguayans were called to vote to repeal 135 of the 476 articles of the LUCthe “star project” of the right-wing president Luis Lacalle Pou.

The legislation, enacted in July 2020, just three months following Lacalle Pou’s arrival, covers a wide range of contentious issues such as securityeducation and reforms friendly with the free market.

With 99.65% of the votes counted, the “no”, defended by the officialismand the white voteswhich in the Uruguayan referendums are added to that option, represented 51.15%, while the “yes” vote obtained a support of 48.84%.

“It was very interesting because practically everyone votes in this referendum, the citizens of Uruguay and it is very even, 50-49, in favor of maintaining the laws”, observed the president.
