AMLO falls for fake news; reacts to the alleged death of Jimmy Carter, former US president

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador reacted to the report that was released this morning about the alleged death of former United States President Jimmy Carter, after being questioned about the subject at his morning press conference, despite the fact that the information had not been confirmed by relatives of the former president, the U.S. government or the media in that country.

At the National Palace, López Obrador expressed his condolences on the alleged death of the former Democratic president, in addition to highlighting his achievements and contributions as president of the United States, such as the recovery of citizenship of the Panama Canal.

“A hug, our condolences, we have very good memories of him, a good president of the United States, a democratic president, thanks to him the Panamanian brothers recovered the sovereignty of the entire Panama Canal zone, thanks to President Jimmy Carter, who reached an agreement with General Torrijos, the recovery of the canal’s citizenship would not have been achieved without President Carter.

“At that time, there was an extraordinary leader in Panama, Omar Torrijo, who said: ‘He who is distressed, relaxes’; and other things that former President Carter also did,” he said.

The Mexican president recalled that Carter was unable to be re-elected; however, he insisted that during his administration the former US president “did a lot for his country and for our America.”

López Obrador also commented that as a former president, Carter helped prevent electoral fraud in Latin America and that in 2006 he was even interested in supporting him in the face of alleged fraud in the Mexican elections, in which Felipe Calderón Hinojosa won.

“Later, as a former president, he helped prevent electoral fraud in Latin America and in 2006 he was still interested, only after he had retired, in helping us when the fraud of 2006 in Mexico occurred, when the presidency was stolen from us for the first time. A hug to his family, his friends, the American people, we are very sorry, may he rest in peace,” he said.

This morning a statement was released, supposedly issued by Jimmy Carter’s Office to inform about the death of the former President of the United States, at the age of 99.

However, no American media outlet or the American government confirmed the veracity of the document, so after its release, various reporters and social media users began to delete it.

The family of the former Democratic president later denied the news of his death, stating that Carter is still alive and remains hospitalized, according to information published in Milenio.
