MEXICO CITY (EFE).— President López Obrador expressed his confidence in his ambassador to Spain, Quirino Ordaz, following a controversial photograph in which he appears alongside former president Carlos Salinas de Gortari (1988-1994), a staunch rival of the current Mexican ruler.
López Obrador was reacting to the image published by Vanitatis, from the Spanish newspaper “El Confidencial”, which circulated on Tuesday of a party held by the Asturian businessman Juan Antonio Pérez Simón in which Ordaz appears in a group with Salinas de Gortari.
“He sent a note, because ambassadors constantly report, he already explained to me. I trust Quirino, to begin with. Secondly, he already explained to me, it was a party for Pérez Simón, I know Pérez Simón, he was originally a partner of Carlos Slim, he is a very successful businessman,” he declared in his morning press conference.
The president downplayed criticism once morest Ordaz, former governor of Sinaloa (2017-2021) who sparked controversy since his appointment as ambassador in 2022 because he was a member of the (PRI.
“That was it, I have the same confidence in him as always,” he insisted. “Pérez Simón had a party at his house, invited his friends, I think Salinas is his friend and (José María) Aznar, and he invited Quirino as the Mexican ambassador and other businessmen and cultural patrons and that was it,” he said.
