AMLO decides to pause relations with US and Canadian embassies over judicial reform

“The relationship continues, but hopefully there is something on their part a confirmation that they will be respectful of Mexico’s independenceof the sovereignty of our country, but as long as that does not happen and they continue with that policy, there is a pause,” declared López Obrador.

The Mexican ruler clarified that “the pause” is only with the ambassadors of Washington, Ken Salazar, and Ottawa, Graeme C. Clarkbut it will not affect relations with the American governments.

“Pause means we are going to give us our time“, he added.

On August 22, Ken Salazar warned that Judicial reform in Mexico puts democracy at “risk” and trade relations with the United States, and warned that the popular election of judges would facilitate the interference of drug cartels in the justice system.

That same day, Clark reported “concerns” of investors in the face of the reform, which would be approved in September, when López Obrador’s alliance of parties has the necessary majority, of two thirds of Congress, to modify the Constitution.

“What a coincidence that at the same time that they are speaking out in Mexico through the United States Embassy, the Canadians are doing so? Which is also embarrassing, with all due respect to the Government of Canada, that is, It seems like an associated state, together“the president questioned.

If the reform is approved, Mexicans would go to the polls starting in 2025 to elect judges, magistrates and ministers of the Supreme Courtwhile in 2026 the country will face the review of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC), which calls for legal certainty for investments.

López Obrador acknowledged that “everyone has the right to demonstrate,” but that “the Constitution establishes in its article 89 that The president must adhere to the principles of non-intervention“.

AMLO justified that the accusations against the Governments of the United States and Canada are because “They would like to have influence in matters that only concern Mexicans.”

“How are we going to allow the ambassador (Salazar), with all due respect, to This is not a matter of litigation “We are not going to let him think that what we are doing is wrong? But we are not going to tell him to leave the country, no, but we do have to read the Constitution to him,” he argued.

This is not the first time that López Obrador has “paused” a bilateral relationship, since in 2022 he announced “a pause” with Spain, which in practical terms did not translate into diplomatic actions.
