AMLO, Claudia Sheinbaum and Morena launch an attack against Norma Piña

MEXICO CITY.- Figures of the Morena party, including its founder and current president of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorthey launched themselves once morest Norma PineappleMinister President of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) for the reform of the Judiciary.

The Morena statements come following a call from Minister Norma Piña to AMLO to join the discussions on judicial reform.

AMLO rejects dialogue with Norma Piña

President López Obrador refused to speak personally with Minister Norma Piña, in response to her call to join the discussions on the reform of the Judicial Branch.

“I have nothing to do with this. I have already submitted my initiative in accordance with my powers and I am convinced that reform is necessary,” he said from the National Palace.

In his ‘morning’ conference this Tuesday, the president indicated that Luisa Maria Mayorholder of the Ministry of the Interiorwill be the one who will dialogue with the ministers of the SCJN.

“The Secretary of the Interior might meet with the ministers and she considered that the members of Congress would do the same,” he said.

AMLO criticized that for “a long time” “corrupt judges” were protected and people who “should be in jail” such as members of organized crime and white-collar criminals were left free.

“With all due respect, I would like to say to the president (of the Court): Why don’t you resolve the issue of the tax payments of big businessmen or bankers? Why are you taking so long to resolve what should be a quick decision?”

The president insisted that “there are theses, there is jurisprudence, everything is there. Why are they taking so long? Why the delaying tactics? Let them review the cases.”

“Why don’t they provide a report on how many defendants there are who have not been sentenced for years and explain to us why they decide to earn more than the President, if the Constitution establishes the opposite?” he said.

Is Claudia Sheinbaum also attacking the SCJN?

In addition to the call to AMLO, the president minister also asked Claudia SheinbaumMexico’s virtual president, to join the discussions on judicial reform.

“There is already dialogue, that is why there is an open parliament, the ministers of the Court have already participated,” said the Morena member in response to the invitation of the president of the Court.

“Dialogue always exists […] The issue is that the judicial reform is already in the hands of the legislature and that is why the parliamentary discussion has been opened. She has already personally participated in a dialogue on judicial reform, this dialogue has already taken place,” he said.

“So this idea that we have to meet with the next President to change a proposal that was already presented, that was part of the campaign process, well that is what the dialogues in the legislation are for,” he said.

The virtual president insisted that her party is not closed to dialogue, but that with regard to the discussion of AMLO’s judicial reform, parliament is already open: “some other topic in general might be a reason for a meeting,” she said.

Sheinbaum also downplayed Norma Piña’s concern regarding the election of judges by popular vote, warning that only “the most popular” will reach the Supreme Court, not necessarily the most qualified.

In this regard, the Morena member assured that this will not happen because people are intelligent and know what role a judge, a magistrate or a minister of the Supreme Court will play.

“It is not a question of popularity, but of recognizing that the people can decide who their representatives are in the judiciary,” he said.

“A judge who is elected by the people has more autonomy and will not easily accept being told this by anyone, not from the government, not from the private sector, not from anywhere, because he knows that he answers to the people of Mexico,” said Claudia Sheinbaum.

Ricardo Monreal says “no” to Norma Piña

Ricardo Monrealcoordinator of Morena in the Senate and former presidential candidate, said that Minister Norma Piña was “neglectful” in her call to President López Obrador and Claudia Sheinbaum to discuss the reform because she did not summon the Judiciary.

“Yesterday I heard the Minister President demand or propose a dialogue with the acting President of the Republic […] to the virtual president […] She failed to address and call upon those of us who are responsible for deciding, the legislator,” he said.

“The Legislative Branch is the reforming body and is the one empowered to deliberate and, where appropriate, approve judicial reform,” he said.

During the Fourth Forum of Dialogues for the Reform of the Judicial Branch, Monreal criticized that the Judiciary has become a “government of judges” or criptocraciawhere they have excessive power over the other powers of the State.

He stated that cryptocracy is the product of a deviation or malformation of the division of powers.

“The best vaccine once morest cryptocracy is precisely the popular election of judges, magistrates and ministers, since by sharing the same source of legitimacy, the citizen vote, the three powers would be homologated,” he explained.

He also stated that AMLO, by presenting the initiative, “concluded and exhausted his power.”

“The virtual president will lead the country and the ordinary legislator and reforming body will clarify the specific legal norm and will have to decide on these and other issues that we are discussing today.”

“But, the dialogue is here, the dialogue, we are exercising it here,” he said.
