The foregoing was detailed by the Mexican president before the imminent start of the queries regarding his questioned energy policywho requested United States and Canada within the trade agreement between the three countries.
“I spoke of three things that help us, the proximity to the largest market in the world, hence the importance of the treaty, it is important without a doubt, two, honesty and three, justice. In the first, even in the case of the most important market in the world, if having access to that market implies us giving up sovereignty, we do not accept it“, said
“We are not going to hand over our independence to any foreign government, they are also not right, even when they have many lambiscones, they sell homelands that applaud them in our country, they are not right, it was not in vain that the negotiation was stopped for almost 15 days because of the the eighth article of the treaty because I opposed what the officials of the previous government had already negotiated,” he pointed out.
The head of the Mexican federal executive asserted that he is planning to send a letter to his American counterpart Joe Biden to request that the eighth article of the T-MEC be respected in energy matters, of which he explained that he had already accepted by the previous Government headed by Donald Trump.
“I’m sure that President Biden doesn’t even know, I want to send him a letter to tell him ‘hey, what’s going on, maybe you’re not informed because you’ve always told me and I believe you, that our relationship is going to happen. on an equal footing, and that respects our sovereignty. Who is making these decisions? I ask you to help me clarify what it is regarding’. I’m thinking regarding it and maybe I’m going to do it, it’s important, they say ‘it’s a period of clarification’”, he pointed out.
López Obrador made it clear that there will be no breach of the trade agreement despite what the opponents of the Government of the Fourth Transformation expect.
There will be no rupture (of the T-MEC), that I advance, and why not, not only because we are right, but because it does not suit us, and it is not only Mexico, it does not suit the United States, “he argued.
“It is no longer the time of before, imagine if in Mexico they are already being made, there are, parts are being manufactured, there are auto parts parts even for the war industry of the United States, it is already an essential and convenient integration for the two nations , the two towns, it is no longer that I close the border and I am going to harm you, ”he emphasized.
Last week, the United States and Canada requested to start consultations within the framework of the T-MEC on Mexico’s energy policy, which President López Obrador has changed to favor public companies Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).
This is the fourth time that the general dispute settlement mechanism of Chapter 31 of the T-MEC, in force since July 2020, has been used, according to the Mexican Ministry of Economy.
