Why do ribs crack in the elderly?

“Human ribs have 12 pairs of bones. The first seven pairs are attached directly to the sternum (chest bone). But the remaining three pairs do not rest directly on the sternum, but are attached to the sternum by cartilage. This part, called the chochondral junction, is always active.

Hyperactivity in the elderly can put more stress on cartilage that weakens with age. A rib fracture occurs when any of the cartilage in these ribs breaks down. Therefore, the ribs are prone to misalignment. Due to this, you will feel pain in your upper abdomen or lower chest – reports Indian Express.

“This is a minor problem that occurs in the elderly, athletes and overweight people. In elderly people who have weakened muscles and bones, such problems can occur due to severe exertion, coughing, colds and sneezing. But fractures should be avoided and no other intervention required. If there is inflammation and pain, a proper examination is necessary,” says Dr. Yash Gulati, Senior Consultant Orthopedic, Joint Replacement and Spine, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi.

Why do muscle tears occur?

“Ribs are also attached to muscles, so when the cartilage is cut there is a muscle tear. It is commonly seen during participation in certain high-intensity sports and car accidents. Sternum fractures are uncomfortable and may cause other symptoms such as difficulty breathing and chest swelling. In some cases, when there is an injury, it can affect the lungs and heart,” says Dr Yadav.

The remedy for this

“Wear a rib belt, take pain killers, take calcium and vitamin supplements. If the pain is bearable, recovery is possible. It can also “self-heal muscle tears.”
