He was born in the Netherlands twenty years ago. He lives in Borgerhout. At the start of 2021, aged 18, Amir Bachrouri was elected president of the Vlaams Jeugdraad, the Flemish Youth Council, an advisory body of the Flemish government. This law student was then the youngest president ever elected to this body. Today, as his three-year term ends, he publishes his first book. In this work in Dutch entitled “Doe maar niet” published by Borgerhoff&Lamberigts, the young author of Moroccan origin evokes his dreams and his struggles, his joys and his sorrows.
Amir Bachrouri says he always dreamed of becoming someone. Very early on, he started reading adventure stories. Today, this precocious young man takes his time as a student to tour schools and talk regarding the books he has read. Amir lives several lives at once. Curious, open-minded, the young president of the Vlaamse Jeugdraad has become an essential face of the societal debate in Flanders. Columnist for the weekly Knack, present on TV sets, very active on social networks, he speaks on current issues and his voice counts. Is he considering entering politics? “No, I will not run for office next year. Politics does not seem very self-centered,” he told the newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws.
Amir Bachrouri did not hesitate to engage in fights that are close to his heart. “Too many young people today are dropping out of school. They don’t have the same opportunities as me. We must help them get out of this impasse,” he says.
His book, “some advised me not to do it”, he confides in the “Gazet van Antwerpen”. This ultimately became the title of the work: “Doe maar niet” (“Let it go”). Determined, daring, enduring, Amir traces his path, sometimes bumpy. And yet, initially, nothing was easy for him, born into a modest family. With his skills, his enthusiasm, his open mind, he is an edifying example who can inspire many young people.
