It is reported that the United States has requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council amid growing concerns over North Korea’s resumption of nuclear tests.
AFP, citing a diplomat on the 9th (local time), reported that the US had requested an emergency meeting on the North Korean issue on the 11th. The meeting is expected to take place around 3 p.m. New York time, according to reports.
The US has been considering calling a meeting since late last week, AFP said. In this regard, on the 7th, North Korea fired a projectile presumed to be a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) from the Sinpo sea area in South Hamgyong Province.
Meanwhile, before the news of the convening of the Security Council meeting was announced, the US State Department had warned that North Korea might prepare for a seventh nuclear test.
At a regular briefing on the 6th, Deputy Spokesperson Jeolina Porter said, “North Korea evaluates that the Punggye-ri test site is being prepared.” This will be the 7th experiment.”
The United States will assume the presidency of the Security Council for one month this month. US ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said at her presidency press conference on the 3rd that “there are resolutions under discussion at the board of directors regarding North Korea,” she suggested earlier this month.
