Amid challenges with its own modem, Apple extends agreement with Qualcomm

Just a few months following renewing the partnership with Qualcomm for the supply of modems 5G intended for your devices, the Apple decided to extend the agreement for another two years. This means that the two companies will have to work together until at least March 2027.

The news was revealed during Qualcomm’s financial results conference, as published by analyst Ben Bajarin on X (formerly Twitter) and confirmed by Bloomberg.

In an also unsurprising development, Qualcomm’s call mentioned:
“Apple has exercised its unilateral option to extend its global patent licensing agreement for an additional two years, extending the existing agreement until March 2027.”

The news regarding the contract extension comes amid strong indications that Apple is facing difficulties in producing its own 5G modem, whose launch date has been postponed to 2026. We even have rumors that the company might have canceled the component development.

In any case, it is becoming increasingly evident that Apple will continue to depend on Qualcomm for longer than it initially planned — perhaps because it understands that its solution falls short of what is currently presented by the competitor.
