Americans spend more on cannabis than on chocolate

Americans would have spent more than US$30 billion (CA$40.5 billion) on legal cannabis in 2022, which is almost double the sales of chocolate, which was at US$18 billion (CA$24 billion) during the same period.

On the occasion of the unofficial Cannabis Day on April 20, CNN took a look at the data on the sale of legal cannabis, revealing astronomical amounts for the year 2022.

“Legally, because who knows what’s going on in the illegal market?” senior data reporter Harry Enten told CNN.

Cannabis sales, for example, far outpaced chocolate sales, which stabilized at US$18 billion.

Legal in 20 states since 2012, cannabis would thus be considered less dangerous than alcohol for many Americans, who voted alcohol as “what is most dangerous” at 54% in 2022, against 7% for the cannabis, according to a survey reported by the American media.

This trend particularly shows the evolution of the image of this recreational drug, which was voted as more dangerous at 29% in 1974 against 31% for alcohol.
