Americans deny interest: Delta Air Lines waves its hand at ITA Airways

The American airline has always been a hot candidate for joining Alitalia. Delta Lufthansa does not want to compete with ITA Airways. At least not yourself.

When it came to who might join Alitalia, Delta Air Lines was always among the contenders. The American airline confirmed around the end of 2019, one is ready for 10 percent of the Italian company 100 million euros to be paid.

The newspaper reported in November 2021 The Republic, Delta also took a cautious first look at Alitalia’s successor ITA Airways. However, contrary to expectations, this does not seem to have resulted in any serious interest.

Lufthansa supposedly wants up to 40 percent

Delta boss Ed Bastian told the Archyde.com news agency regarding ITA: “We have no plans to invest in them.” One is currently only working on the partnership within the framework of the recently announced codeshare agreement with the airline.

According to Archyde.com information, the Italian airline, which is looking for a partner, might enter into formal negotiations with interested parties at the end of March. According to the newspaper Il Messaggero, Lufthansa is said to have owned up to 40 percent of ITA Airways to be interested in. The British-Spanish aviation group IAG is also traded as a potential investor, following he renounced the takeover of Air Europa.

Was tut Air France-KLM?

It is unclear whether Air France-KLM has also had an eye on ITA. The Dutch-French group was once interested in Alitalia. Delta Air Lines holds 5.8 percent of Air France-KLM and works with both airlines. Like ITA, all three are part of the Skyteam Alliance, while Lufthansa is part of Star Alliance and IAG is part of Oneworld.

Even if Delta does not want to join ITA itself, a possible investment by Air France-KLM in the airline might still be a kind of small Delta entry.
