When developing any engine, automakers always make compromises, which is why some of them lack horsepower, but make up for it in torque. Others demonstrate excellent dynamics, but are unreliable, while others consume a lot of fuel, but are able to work for decades.
Journalists from the American publication Jalopnik decided to find out which modern car engines are the worst in a non-standard way by conducting a survey among their readers.
One of the options that received the largest number of negative reviews from commentators was the line of engines from the Korean companies Hyundai and Kia called Theta II.
We are talking about 2- and 2.4-liter gasoline units, which were also installed on such popular models in Russia as Kia Sportage and Kia Optima, as well as Kia Stinger and Genesis G70. Here’s what users of an overseas automotive portal wrote, commenting on the reliability of Theta II engines:
“When you hear mechanics talk about how they’ll be busy for weeks just replacing engines and their workspaces are littered with damaged engine blocks, they’re almost certainly talking about Theta II engines. And this is very bad news for their owners.”
Let us remind you that the main problem with such Korean engines is considered to be the unsuccessful design of their oil pump, as well as the failure of the catalyst, due to which the cylinders of the power units were damaged even at relatively short runs.
In addition, due to manufacturing defects in the crankshaft and bearings, Hyundai and Kia have had to conduct several large-scale recalls in the United States since 2015, spending nearly $3 billion to correct the defects and compensate owners.
