An American woman’s heart skipped a beat when she saw that she had just been billed by her Uber driver in the wrong currency, driving her bill up from nearly 30,000 Costa Rican colóns – which equals US$55 – to nearly US$30,000.

“I was absolutely shocked. My heart sank,” said Dominique Adams, in an interview with Newsweek, following posting a video on TikTok to recount the incident, which has reached more than 9.3 million views.
It was towards the end of June that the woman, who was staying in Costa Rica, reportedly called an Uber to get to the airport to join her husband in Guatemala to renew their wedding vows.
That’s when she would have been charged US$29,994, instead of the same amount in local currency, which would have been equivalent to around US$55.
Fortunately, the total amount was finally returned to her, not without having had to fight with her bank and the company Uber, who did not facilitate the matter when she would have come up once morest automatic messages, before denouncing the whole thing on social networks to attract attention. This is where things would have moved, according to her.
“I was definitely worried that I wouldn’t be able to get my money back because Uber and my bank didn’t help me and didn’t provide me with any type of solution. It was a constant battle, ”continued the woman to the American weekly.
But what worries her more is that the large amount was withdrawn from her account without going through security or verification measures, lamenting that she was “blamed” for letting her bank know that she would be traveling to Central America, she reportedly told Newsweek.
“My bank told me that because I had placed the travel advisory, it bypassed security, when generally a charge like this would have been detected as fraud,” she said.
It was only following four long stressful days, traveling on a tighter budget, that the couple finally got their money back.
