American Students Explore German Culture and Language during Summer Exchange Program

Shortly before the summer holidays there was an exciting high point in the almost-finished school year at von Saldern-Gymnasium: Twelve students from many different states of the USA, from Alaska to Nebraska, Ohio, Illinois, New Jersey, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Louisiana to Florida, were in Brandenburg for 15 days. A stay in Bonn and Cologne follows.

This trip to Germany is financed by a grant from the PAD (Pädagogischer Austauschdienst der Kultusministerkonferenz Deutschlands). Only the very best German students were allowed to apply for this. The group is accompanied by German teacher Stephanie Zachar from Colorado Springs.

In Brandenburg, the Americans stayed with host families to immerse themselves in cultural life in Germany and improve their language skills. With the host siblings, they attended regular classes, had special German lessons and, above all, there were many excursions and activities: visiting the Bundestag, Berlin on Bike, Futurium, Potsdam Castles, canoeing, printing in the sun sail, following in the footsteps of Gertrud von Saldern in the St. Gotthardtkirche and so on.

In the two intensive weeks, new friendships were made, and many of the young people will definitely see each other once more, whether in Brandenburg or in the USA. Or they meet once more while studying, some of the Americans are aiming to study in Germany.

A big thank you goes to all the host families who made this traditional intercultural exchange possible and who took great care of the guests.
