Joseph Dituri is an American professor with a passion for marine life, having served in the US Navy and now teaches for the University of South Florida (USF). However, Since March he undertook an investigation for which he intends to spend 100 days in extreme conditions living under the surface of a lake in Florida.

Last Sunday, May 14, Dituri broke the record for life underwater. The people who had lasted the longest there were 73 days, two hours and 34 minutes, and they were two professors from Tennessee, Bruce Cantrell and Jessica Fain. However, Joseph would spend 75 days more than 9 meters below the surface of the water.

Dituri is doing a study of how the human body responds to long-term exposure to extreme pressure, but he has announced that he wants to inspire generations to study marine life.

When the professor announced that he would have broken the world record, he said on his Twitter: “curiosity to discover has led me here. My goal since day 1 has been to inspire generations to come, interview scientists who study life underwater and learn how the human body works in extreme environments.”

The 55-year-old man underwent a series of tests psychosocial, psychological and medical, including blood tests, ultrasound and electrocardiograms, also stem cell tests, before, during and following the project, USF said in a statement.

The researcher has commented that To kill free time, he gets up at 5 in the morning to exercise and eats products rich in protein.such as eggs and salmon, which can be heated in the microwave.

In addition to that, Dituri continues to teach online biomedical engineering classes from the lagoon, as reported by the University of South Florida.

The man lives exactly 9.15 meters deep in a place of 9.3 square meters and the capsule where it resides, unlike a submarine, does not use technology to adjust to the increase in underwater pressure, therefore, what the researchers are looking for is to know how the human body reacts exposed to extreme pressure for a long period.

Notably Joseph is expected to stay around 100 days in the refuge under the lagoon, but the teacher has stated that he misses the surface. “What I miss most regarding being on the surface is the sun”, Dituri told the Associated Press agency.
