Washington – US President Joe Biden sent two letters to the Egyptian President and the Emir of Qatar regarding accelerating ceasefire negotiations.
A Biden administration official said on Friday that President Joe Biden recently sent two special letters to the Egyptian President and the Emir of Qatar.
In his letters, Biden called on Egypt and Qatar to “pressure the movement of Palestinian factions to accelerate ceasefire negotiations,” according to the American source.
The two letters coincide with news of an upcoming meeting by CIA Director Bill Burns with senior officials from Qatar, Egypt and Israel in Cairo to discuss the issue of prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas.
In a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, Biden called for “an immediate ceasefire in Gaza” and for Israel to take steps in this direction.
According to American media, CIA Director Burns is expected to visit Cairo at the end of this week.
There was no comment from Cairo or Doha regarding the two letters and their content.
The mediation of Qatar, Egypt and the United States, which is currently ongoing, seeks to reach a prisoner exchange deal and a second truce between Israel and Hamas, following the first, which lasted a week until the beginning of last December, and resulted in a prisoner exchange and the entry of limited aid into the Gaza Strip.
