An American accused of killing his mother at sea in a bid to inherit the family property has finally been found dead in his cell before he might even stand trial.
The trial of Nathan Carman, 29, was due to take place next October, but the latter was reportedly found dead by prison guards around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, Doug Losue, superintendent of the Cheshire Department of Corrections, told CBS News. An investigation has been opened by the police to understand the causes and circumstances surrounding his death.
Nathan Carman was accused of killing his mother in 2016, during a deep-sea fishing trip, in an attempt to collect a multi-million dollar inheritance.
According to his lawyers, David Sullivan and Martin Minnella, the man appeared to be in good spirits during a Zoom meeting the day before his death.
“We spoke to him yesterday. He was in a good mood […] We were ready to start choosing a jury on October 10 and we were confident that we were going to win. It’s a tragedy, a tragedy,” Mr. Minnella said.
“We believe that Mr. Carman left us a note that we are looking forward to in an attempt to make sense of a very tragic situation,” Mr. Sullivan added during a press conference on Thursday followingnoon.
