The Águilas del América, led by the Spanish Ángel Villacampa, beat Cruz Azul 1-5 this Friday to climb to third place in the classification of the Clausura 2024 tournament of the Mexican women’s soccer league.
On the thirteenth day of the championship, an own goal by Edith Carmona, a double by Aylin Aviléz and as many by Casandra Cuevas and Nicolette Hernández led the Águilas to victory, which reached 28 points, three away from equaling the leader Tigres UANL.
Ximena Ríos scored for Cruz Azul, which remains in third-to-last place.
América opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Katty Martínez filtered a pass that, in an attempt to clear, Carmona sent it to her goal for the 0-1 in favor of Villacampa’s team.
Cuevas increased the lead for his team at 29, with a volley shot that went under Jennifer Amaro, Cruz Azul goalkeeper, to make it 0-2.
On their first shot of the game, Cruz Azul scored. In the 34th minute, Ximena Ríos, among three defenders, took a left-footed shot that went over goalkeeper Itzel González and made it 1-2.
Despite the celestial reaction, the Águilas regained control of the match and in the 39th minute, Martínez, from the left, hit a serve that Aviléz finished off in the center of the area for 1-3.
América continued to dominate the second half. At 47 minutes, Hernández made a low shot that entered the Cruz Azul goalkeeper’s left post and at 49 Amaro caused a rebound in the area that allowed Aviléz to make it 1-5.
The thirteenth day began on Thursday with the victory of the Rayadas del Monterrey, led by Costa Rican coach Amelia Valverde, 3-1 over Tijuana.
The matches will continue later with Mazatlán’s visit to León. This Saturday, the Tuzas del Pachuca will visit San Luis and Toluca will face Juárez.
On Sunday, Argentine Antonio Spinelli’s Chivas del Guadalajara will host Atlas, Puebla of the champions Tigres UANL and Santos Laguna of the Pumas UNAM.
