The US ambassador announced to limit diplomatic relations with India.
According to the global journal, Eric Garcetti, the American ambassador posted in India, has told regarding the strained relations and said that communication with the Indian authorities must be severed.
The spokesperson of the US Department of State said that the allegation of India’s involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Najjar in Canada is serious, India must cooperate in the investigation.
Eric Garcetti has told his team in India that diplomatic tensions between India and Canada over the killing of a Sikh leader might strain relations between the two countries for some time.
Ambassador Garcetti also said that the US may need to reduce its contacts with Indian officials indefinitely.
Diplomatic tensions between the two countries began on September 19 when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of involvement in the killing of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Najjar in British Columbia in June 2020.
However, the US Embassy in India has rejected claims that US-India relations may deteriorate amid the ongoing diplomatic standoff between India and Canada.
The embassy said that US Ambassador Eric Garcetti is working hard to advance US partnership with India.
Earlier on September 28, US Secretary of State Anthony Blanken during a meeting with Indian Foreign Minister Subramaniam Jaishankar urged India to cooperate with Canada in the investigation of Hardeep Singh’s murder.
It should be noted that 45-year-old Hardeep Singh Najjar was shot dead on June 18 outside a Gurdwara in Surrey, a suburb of Vancouver. Najjar was a supporter of an independent state of Khalistan and was designated a ‘terrorist’ by India in July 2020.
Following Justin Trudeau’s accusations that the ambassadors of both countries were expelled, the Canadian prime minister reached out to allies to urge India to cooperate in the investigation into Najjar’s murder.
