the governing parties announce that psychotherapeutic training is to be made academic. This measure serves both to ensure quality and to create more cost-effective access to training for this important health profession. A corresponding amendment to the Psychotherapy Act will be sent for review in the course of 2023.
Psychotherapy has been developed, applied, taught and researched for more than a century as the royal road to the treatment of mental illness, with Austrian founding fathers such as Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler, Jakob Levi Moreno and Viktor Frankl becoming famous all over the world for their scientific findings.
Psychotherapy serves to prevent, identify, alleviate, stabilize and heal disorders with pathological value for which psychotherapy is indicated, as well as to change behavior and attitudes that require treatment. Furthermore, their task is to promote, maintain or restore the development, maturation and health of the persons treated or cared for. The targeted application of psychotherapeutic interventions cannot be replaced by any other form of treatment if there is a corresponding indication. to be supplemented if necessary. A special feature of this form of treatment is that patients can and should choose the form of treatment framework that suits them, and that within this framework each patient has their own approach and individually helpful therapy plan developed. Efficacy research proves the success of treatment through all four approaches (method cluster) recognized in Austria (Datler et.al, Psychotherapieforum 2021). The application of the findings and methods of the humanistic therapy directions, the psychodynamic therapy directions, the systemic therapy directions and the behavioral therapy directions is taught by psychotherapists and is reserved for this professional group.
In the meantime, the research results of the therapy directions within the four clusters are already being conveyed at several universities by certified teaching therapists who are registered with the Federal Ministry for Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection. In multi-year training courses (5-7 years), which have been subject to strict controls by the Federal Ministry for more than 30 years, value is placed not only on professional competence, but also on the ability to form relationships and personality development. The interweaving of theory and practice is another important element in training to become a psychotherapist. This focus should also be maintained in the planned academization of the training as an independent study of psychotherapy.
Another central point is: If it says psychotherapy on it, there is also psychotherapy in it. Protection of activities and reservation of activity will also be very clearly regulated in the new law. This serves to provide clarity, security and orientation for our patients and clients on whose behalf and on their behalf more than 11,000 registered psychotherapists and almost 4000 in training under supervision work daily. Because psychotherapy helps! And that for more than 100 years!
The cooperation of different disciplines, such as psychiatry, psychology, psychotherapy, as well as other health professions characterizes a modern, people-friendly and efficient prophylaxis and treatment. Equivalence under social security law, with clearly communicated differentiation in terms of content, is an important basis. The ÖBVP is very concerned regarding the appropriate education of the population in terms of responsible patients with a high level of self-efficacy.
