AMD’s upcoming Ryzen 7000-series chips will hit a new milestone, becoming the company’s first desktop chips with 5nm cores. In an earlier Computex speech, AMD CEO Su Zifeng confirmed that the Ryzen 7000 series of chips will come this fall. In addition to the 5nm Zen 4 core, its redesigned I/O core (including RDNA2 display, DDR5 control devices, PCIe 5.0 controllers, etc.) will also be built on a 6nm process, which is expected to further reduce energy consumption.
Since this is only a preview of Computex, AMD did not provide too many detailed specifications, models or data related to the Ryzen 7000, only that in the single thread performance of Cinebench, it will be as much as 15% faster than the Ryzen 5950X. However, the main battlefield of AMD and Intel is still in multi-core performance (especially Intel’s main high and low core combination), and this part will probably have a more clear comparison following the listing. In addition, each core will have up to 1MB of L2 cache, and the highest overclocking speed in the series will exceed 5GHz.
Coming out at the same time as the new 7000 series processors are Socket AM5 motherboards with 1718-pin LGA contacts, which would make Ryzen 7000 completely incompatible with past AM4 motherboards, but at least the heatsink is still generic, so if If you invested in expensive cooling equipment before, you can still use it. The new motherboard will provide 24 PCIe 5.0 lanes shared by display and storage, plus up to 14 USB 3.0, and up to 4 HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2. If the chipset is subdivided, the B650 will be suitable for mainstream computers, the X650 is for general players, and the X650 Extreme is aimed at top users.
Although the protagonist is Ryzen 7000, AMD also mentioned the mainstream notebook processor products that are expected to debut in Q4. This new product will be code-named “Mendocino” and will be equipped with four 6nm Zen 2 cores and an RDNA 2 display. It’s not an overly exciting spec, but it should be more than adequate for just surfing the web, having a video conference or something. Products using Mendocino are expected to be priced between US$399 and US$699.
