AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the best processor for gaming, but isn’t overclockable

AMD recently announced its new Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor, which it calls the best processor for gaming. However, fans will be disappointed to learn that it won’t be overclockable.

New Ryzen 7 5800X3D is extremely similar to the original Ryzen 7 5800X model, with eight cores, 16 threads and compatibility with AMD’s AM4 socket. However, AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D comes with one major trump card that may well appeal to gamers. In effect, it will be the first consumer processor with the 3D V-Cache function.

This increases the L3 cache from 32 to 96 MB. The company claims that this additional cache should translate into ~15% increase in overall performance over the Ryzen 5900X, while this one nevertheless offers 12 cores and 24 threads. Thanks to this extra performance, AMD claimed in January that the 5800X3D will outperform both the Ryzen 9 5900X and Intel’s Core i9 12900K in 1080p gamingand shared during his conference the results of his own tests which indeed show that the chip has a slight advantage over the competition in certain titles.

The Ryzen 5 5800X3D excels at gaming, but no longer supports overclocking

While the addition of 3D V-cache will give the chip a real performance boost over the competition, this new technology means it will have to sacrifice some key features such as overclocking support. Indeed, in an interview with Hothardware, AMD Technical Marketing Director Robert Hallock confirmed the bad news.

According to him, while the chips can indeed reach up to 1.5-1.6V with the overclock, the 3D V-Cache stack that sits on top of the Zen 3 cores is limited to 1.35V and it is already working. at its limit out of the box. The Ryzen 7 5800 X3D would therefore not survive if users try to apply higher voltage with overclocking.

Either way, fans of the red giant should be thrilled to see AMD stand up to the new chips Alder Lake de 12e generation of intel. The Ryzen 7 58003DX will arrive on March 20 at the same price as the Ryzen 5800X at launch, i.e. $449. In France, the recommended rate should be set at 459 eurosbut the global shortage of semiconductors could well make the price of the first copies soar.
