AMD’s new SP5 socket: 4 x the size of a current Ryzen

AMD announced the Epyc 7004 series of processors, code name Genoa, at the end of last year. These monstrous new processors will use the Zen 4 architecture and are intended for servers obviously. They are built built with TSMC 5nm process, and will have up to 96 cores / 192 threads. But despite the use of 5nm their size is just impressive: socket SP5 has 6096 pins49% more than the 4094 of its predecessor and 46% more than Intel’s current Xeon socket, the LGA 4189. The following details will allow us to discover the AMD SP5 socket which will accommodate these monsters.

To fully understand, images are not enough without putting them into perspective. The SP5 occupies a size almost equivalent to 4 current Ryzen or… 1/3 of a mini-ITX motherboard : Each CPU measures approximately 75mm by 72mm.

The Epyc Genoa processors should arrive before the end of the year and AMD has certainly already delivered several of its large customers to qualify this new generation. CPUs will compete with Xeon-type processors Sapphire Rapids from Intel also expected at the end of the year and which will also be compatible with DDR5 and PCIe Gen 5.

Videocardz posted a photo of an alleged EPYC Genoa processor in the past few hours showing the 12 chiplets installed on the SP5 package. This photo seems to be that of a model allowing to view the layouts of the chip.
