AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D received 3D V-Cache memory on only one chiplet

This is a compromise in terms of overclocking and gaming performance.

Resource PCWorld continues to carry the banner of industry journalism high. Representatives of the publication at CES 2023 managed to chat with AMD Director of Product Management Scott Stankard (Scott Stankard) and demonstrate the recently introduced Ryzen 9 7950X3D processor without a cover. Even the photo itself made it possible to reveal visual differences in chiplets with computing cores, and comments from an AMD representative confirmed that there is a significant difference between them.

In the older processor of the line, 3D V-Cache memory is located only on one of the chiplets with computing cores. On the one hand, this allowed the company to provide adequate frequency potential for the cores of the second chiplet, and they are able to automatically overclock to 5.7 GHz, when appropriate. At the same time, in games, the 3D V-Cache memory on the adjacent chiplet allows you to increase the performance. If it were on both chipsets, it would not provide a proportional increase in performance, but would increase the cost, so the Ryzen 9 5950X3D processor turned out to be “asymmetric” in terms of memory layout, as Scott explained.

At the same time, he added that the Ryzen 9 7950X3D processor has expanded overclocking features compared to its predecessor, although processors with 3D V-Cache memory still should not be expected to overclock the same results as models without additional memory.
