AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE graphics card now available individually

The Radeon RX 7900 GRE has recently become available from retailers active in Germany such as Proshop and Mindfactory. It appears particularly attractive because of the storage capacity of 16 GB.

AMD introduced the graphics card in the summer of 2023, but since then has only sold it to large customers for installation in complete computers, primarily in Asia. When it was launched, AMD gave a recommended price of 649 US dollars, but the card is now available from German retailers starting at around 580 euros. This refers to a custom design from Asrock (from €579), not the reference model from AMD with a larger cooler.

The price reduction compared to the introduction is a little more significant than you can see at first glance because AMD deducts VAT from the US prices. The price drop can be understood as a reaction to the RTX 4070 Super from Nvidia, which was launched this week and is available from around 650 euros. One point of criticism of the RTX 4070 is that Nvidia only gives it 12 GB of graphics memory. Only the Nvidia 4070 Ti Super, expected from next week, will have 16 GB.

AMD has connected the 7900 GRE’s 16 GB of RAM via a 256-bit wide bus. Only in the next larger model, the 7900 XT, are there 320 bits. In addition, the cache has also shrunk from 80 to 60 MB, which slows down memory access. The GRE still has a decent throughput of 576 GB/s, but the XT has 800 GB/s. Nevertheless, the GRE is still a little faster than the 4070 Super, which pushes through 504 GB/s like the previous model. The gaming performance of the GRE is between the RTX 4070 and the 4070 Ti without the ray tracing discipline. With ray tracing it reaches the level of the 4070 (without the super nickname). This means that the price quoted now seems justified.
