AMD Radeon RX 6600M Desktop Cards Now Selling For Less Than $200
A while ago, we reported on the NVIDIA RTX 30 Laptop GPUs are renamed Full set of desktop cards sold on Chinese platforms. It looks like these companies have recently started selling the Radeon RX 6000 series for mobile as well.
One might wonder why anyone would buy a laptop GPU to serve as a desktop card, but in fact there is a good reason. These cards are much cheaper than desktop models. What happens here is that some companies buy laptop GPUs at more affordable prices than desktop ones and install them on desktop boards.
Finally, models like the Radeon RX 6600M are offered for under $189-189, while the “real” desktop RX 6600 retails for $269 from the same stores. This is a huge difference for almost the same specs.
And speaking of specs, the RX 6600M is the same model as the desktop GPU. Both feature a Navi 23 GPU and have very similar boost clocks in the 2.4-2.5GHz range. There is not much difference in power with the mobile graphics processing unit up to 100W (TGP) and the desktop card up to 132W (TBP). Of course, they both come with 8GB of GDDR6 memory over the 128-bit bus and have the same 14Gbps speeds.

According to the review from MykonstHowever, the laptop’s GPU can still be overclocked, resulting in steady 2.5GHz clocks. However, the memory overclocking doesn’t seem to work because the card immediately goes into safe mode. GPU-Z software confirms that this is a mobile GPU and is fully compatible with AMD drivers:
These companies seem to be reusing the boards used in the RX 6600 desktop models. The RX 6600M laptop has almost the same GPU, architecture, and memory. In most cases, this process is as simple as installing a new GPU and flashing the laptop’s BIOS.
Although the cards sold on Chinese websites have full PCIe 4.0 x16 slots, they are definitely not connected to 16 lanes. Both desktop and mobile GPUs are limited to 8 lanes.
It goes without saying, but these models are not officially supported by AMD, but since the drivers only check the PCI GPU hardware ID, they will be detected as portable and the drivers should work regardless. These cards are much cheaper than the desktop models, but they come with a limited warranty and are subject to additional import duties.
