AMD launches Fluid Motion Frames 2, introducing AI-computed game frame-filling technology | 4Gamers

AMD has introduced Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) technology, enabling any graphics card to utilize frame-filling functionality in games that use DX11 and DX12. The company has now launched the second generation of this technology, which incorporates AI computing to minimize latency and enhance FPS values. Additionally, it extends support to Vulkan and OpenGL game environments.

The new AFMF 2 is integrated into the AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition driver. This version not only includes a toggle feature but also introduces a Search Mode customization function. Users can choose between automatic, standard, and high-definition modes based on their preferences for screen adjustment and fluidity.

In automatic mode, AFMF 2 adjusts frame filling based on the gameplay scene. For instance, in high-speed dynamic scenes, frame filling is temporarily disabled to prevent excessive motion blur. For games set to a resolution above 1440P, automatic mode prioritizes high-definition settings for improved graphics and smoothness, while resolutions below 1080P default to standard mode.

Regardless of the selected mode, AMD states that the overall image quality will surpass that of the previous generation technology.

Furthermore, for entry-level devices with integrated graphics, AFMF 2 provides an additional Performance Mode, offering three settings: automatic, quality, and performance. By default, devices with dedicated graphics cards will prioritize quality mode, while those with integrated graphics will use performance mode to deliver a better gaming experience for lower-performing graphics systems through frame-filling technology.

With the assistance of AI technology, the latency associated with AFMF 2 frame-filling has also been decreased. In “Cyberpunk 2077,” using the Radeon RX 7900XTX even at 4K resolution with ray tracing enabled, latency can be reduced by 28%.

Switching to the Ryzen 7 8700G, which relies on integrated graphics for rendering performance, and using 1080P resolution with ultra-high image quality settings in “CS 2,” latency can improve by 12% as well.

Among several minor upgrades, AFMF 2 is now capable of integrating with the driver’s power-saving strategy. When the Radeon Chill power-saving mode is activated, and if the monitor supports AMD FreeSync, the graphics card driver automatically sets the FPS limit to the maximum refresh rate of the monitor or half of the frame rate, with the remaining half being supplemented through frame filling to conserve power and prevent screen tearing.

However, it is important to note that due to the incorporation of AI technology in the new version, the hardware requirements are more specific compared to the previous generation. This technology is exclusively available for AMD’s own Radeon RX 6000 and 7000 graphics cards, along with Ryzen 7000 series processors with integrated graphics. Certain Ryzen 7000 processors that use GCN and RDNA 2 architecture may not support it.

What is AFMF 2?

AMD has launched its second-generation Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) technology, a groundbreaking advancement that enhances gaming visuals and performance. AFMF 2 enables any graphics card and supports games built on DirectX 11 (DX11) and DirectX 12 (DX12), providing remarkable frame-filling capabilities. This latest iteration integrates AI computing to minimize latency and boost frames per second (FPS), while also extending support to Vulkan and OpenGL game environments.

Key Features of AFMF 2

  • AI Computing Integration: Enhanced performance through reduced latency and increased FPS.
  • Expanded Compatibility: Supports a wide range of games utilizing DX11, DX12, Vulkan, and OpenGL.
  • Powerful Customization Options: Offers different modes like automatic, standard, and high-definition settings.
  • Performance Mode for Entry-Level Devices: Two sets of priorities for independent and internal graphics cards.
  • Optimized Power Management: Links with Radeon Chill for energy efficiency and reduced screen tearing.

Enhanced Customization with Search Mode

The new AFMF 2 technology is housed within the AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition driver, featuring a versatile Search Mode customization function. Players can choose from automatic, standard, and high-definition modes tailored to their gaming needs:

Automatic Mode

Selected by default, this mode dynamically adjusts frame filling based on the game scene. In fast-paced scenarios, frame filling is temporarily disabled to maintain visual stability. At resolutions above 1440P, automatic mode prioritizes high-definition settings, while resolutions below 1080P default to standard mode.

Standard Mode

This mode balances the game’s performance and visual quality, ensuring an optimal gaming experience across a range of setups.

High-Definition Mode

Prioritizes visual fidelity for a premium gaming experience, especially beneficial for high-resolution displays.

Performance Mode for Entry-Level Devices

For users with entry-level systems, AFMF 2 introduces a Performance Mode, providing settings for automatic, quality, and performance-based options:

  • Quality Mode: Default for systems with independent graphics cards, optimizing visual quality.
  • Performance Mode: Prioritized for devices with integrated graphics; enhances FPS without compromising performance.

AI-Powered Latency Reduction

AFMF 2 not only improves frame rates but also significantly lowers latency. In demanding titles like Cyberpunk 2077, equipped with the Radeon RX 7900XTX at 4K resolution with ray tracing enabled, players can expect a latency reduction of up to 28%.

Similarly, utilizing the Ryzen 7 8700G with integrated graphics in CS 2 at 1080P resolution and Very High image settings yields a latency improvement of 12%.

Smart Power Management Features

AFMF 2 also integrates with power-saving features from AMD drivers. When Radeon Chill mode is activated, the graphics card automatically locks the FPS limit at half the screen’s maximum refresh rate, using frame filling to add the remaining frames. This approach conserves energy while significantly reducing screen tearing.

Compatibility Considerations

It’s essential to note that with the introduction of AI features, hardware requirements for AFMF 2 are stricter compared to the first generation. Currently, the technology is fully compatible only with AMD’s Radeon RX 6000 and 7000 series graphics cards and Ryzen 7000 series processors featuring integrated graphics. Here are some key points on compatibility:

GPU / APU Series Compatibility
Radeon RX 6000 Series Supported
Radeon RX 7000 Series Supported
Ryzen 7000 Series with Integrated Graphics Supported
APUs using GCN and RDNA 2 Architecture Not Supported
Older AMD GPUs Not Supported
