Amazon’s Fire TVs stream sound directly to hearing implants

Listening to TV is sometimes a difficult activity when you wear a hearing aid. Amazon has announcement an accessibility feature that will be of interest to those with Cochlear implants: Fire TV boxes and televisions can now transmit audio directly to these devices.

Amazon relied on the open-source Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids (ASHA) protocol to stream audio from its streaming boxes to cochlear implants designed by the manufacturer Cochlear. It was necessary to solve the problems of echoes and noises which can disturb the good listening, and to arrange so that the diffusion is optimal within a radius of 3 meters.

The function is available now in several Fire TV products: the 2nd and 3rd generation Cube, the Omni Fire TV and Fire TV 4-Series TV ranges (sticks are not supported).
