An exchange student sued a member of her host family for spying. The latter had placed a spy camera in the bathroom. According to the judge, Amazon holds a responsibility. Furthermore, we find a whole range of spy cameras on the e-commerce giant’s website.
If the presence of spy cameras in Airbnbs has already made headlines, the sale of this type of object on Amazon is now being singled out. For good reason: a mishap experienced by a Brazilian exchange student in Virginia (United States).
The young woman sued a man, a member of the host family, for having placed a spy camera hidden in a hook located in the bathroom. For the complainant, the objective is clear: the man wanted to spy on her during intimate moments.
But this affair took a particular turn. Indeed, although the sale of such a device is completely legal, the judge considered that Amazon held part of the responsibility in this matter, even if the e-commerce giant is “only” the reseller of this product.
According to the judge, “description regarding use” of the product in question hypothesizes a “recording private moments in a bathroom”. In other words, the product description clearly implies capturing images during intimate moments.
For its part, Amazon defended itself by explaining that it was not responsible for the use made by buyers. In the meantime, the man from the foster family will be tried soon.
A multitude of spy cameras are sold
As noted BFMTV, the bathroom hook used to spy on the young Brazilian student is part of an important range sold by Amazon. By doing a simple search, we can find different objects equipped with a spy camera such as a smoke detector, an electrical outlet or even clothes hooks.
We also find other objects equipped with a spy camera such as a car key, an alarm clock, a pen, a USB key or even a photo frame.
In most cases, the sale of this type of object is justified by two reasons. On the one hand, this device would be sold mainly to film thieves during a burglary. It would therefore be a security tool for the home. On the other hand, these spy cameras would allow us to keep an eye on our children when we are not there.
But in reality, there is no guarantee that the buyer of such a device has the objective of strengthening the security of their home and their loved ones. These spy cameras have become almost undetectable and are now capable of filming in Full HD. Some therefore use them to enter a person’s privacy or simply to spy.
Anyway, now let’s not see spy cameras everywhere around us, but it is better to know that this type of object exists and that they are sold legally. Furthermore, certain reflexes must be adopted and certain techniques can be used to detect them.
