Amazon plans new Tomb Raider movie and own audiovisual universe

After the unusual announcement that actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge was creating a TV adaptation of the Tomb Raider game franchise, currently with Crystal Dynamics, for Amazon Prime Video, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter magazine that the streaming giant is also eyeing a future film in the series.

The long-running series of games has already had some film adaptations — in 2001 and 2003, with Angelina Jolie; then in 2018,
with Alicia Vikander, closer to the aesthetics of the reboot of the saga—, and recently the adaptation rights were disputed between studios. But beyond a simple title, Amazon may be thinking of a franchise’s interconnected universe, which can extend from audiovisual to game narratives.

The film will tie in with Waller-Bridge’s TV show, and both will tie in with Crystal Dynamics’ upcoming game, which Amazon plans to publish for PC and consoles. And it’s likely that future games might be connected to this universe that the streamer is creating.

Sources speaking to the magazine commented that Tomb Raider is one of Amazon’s biggest commitments right now, which is no small feat compared to the mountain of money spent on The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power series. The only Lara Croft-related media that doesn’t seem to play into Amazon’s plans much is the Tomb Raider anime on Netflix, which was announced in 2021, with Haley Atwell.
