WASHINGTON (Archyde.com) – Amazon (NASDAQ:) on Friday launched from the US state of Florida into space the first two prototype satellites within its planned Internet network (Kiper), which is a first step for the company before it sends thousands of other satellites into orbit to broadcast services. The Internet is global and competes with SpaceX’s Starlink.
A United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket bearing the Amazon logo lifted off from Cape Canaveral shortly following 2 p.m. (1800 GMT), carrying two experimental satellites within the Kuiper Network, a long-awaited mission. Amazon initially intended to use different missiles.
The mission aims to test the first pieces of technology from Amazon in space, as the company, the giant e-commerce and web services, is looking forward to deploying another 3,236 satellites over the next few years and providing broadband Internet service globally, an achievement that Elon Musk’s company, SpaceX, is targeting at five thousand. Amazon pledged to invest ten billion in its Kuiper project, which was announced in 2019, the same year SpaceX began operating the first Starlink spacecraft.
