Amazon elimina su Just Walk Out

NEW YORK (EFE).— Amazon will eliminate Just Walk Out technology from its Fresh grocery stores in the United States, which charged consumers without them having to go through the checkout, The Information reported yesterday.

With this payment system, shoppers scan their credit card or Amazon account details at the entrance of the store; once inside, the products they buy are added to a virtual cart and they are automatically charged when they leave.

The service works with cameras and sensors placed on the shelves of the establishments.

In May 2023, The Information revealed that the technology relied on 1,000 employees the company had in India who monitored all cameras to ensure transactions were recorded correctly.

According to the media, 70% of purchases made with this service depended on these workers.

The company will replace this service with Dash Carts, smart carts that allow customers to scan their items as they shop, although Just Walk Out will continue to be used in Amazon Go convenience stores and smaller Fresh stores in the UK.

In addition, the company will install self-payment kiosks and continue to offer assisted payment services.

Amazon currently has 44 Fresh stores in the US, 27 of which use Just Walk Out technology, and also owns the American supermarket chain Whole Foods Market.
