LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) — The Bolivian authorities have temporarily suspended operations of Amaszonas, a small airline with Brazilian capital, due to a $12 million debt that it maintains for the rental of four planes. The measure left 2,000 passengers harmed by the interruption of scheduled flights.

The Bolivian Minister of Public Works, Edgar Montaño, said Tuesday at a press conference that the measure was taken at the request of the Irish company GY Aviation Lease 1816, due to the airline’s non-payment for the rental of four planes.

“Your air operator certificate is not being taken away… It is until they solve it between private parties,” he added.

The manager of Amaszonas, Dardo Gómez, assured that the payments owed had already been paid and reproached that the government had not complied with its decision to grant a period of 10 days to solve the problem. The debt amounts to approximately 12 million dollars.

The day before, the company issued a statement in which it reported that its flights will be affected by the “temporary suspension”, which left some 2,000 passengers affected. In the morning, in Santa Cruz, in eastern Bolivia, several people indicated that they were only notified when they arrived at the airport.

Amaszonas is the second airline that operates in Bolivia following the state-owned Boliviana de Aviación, with at least 2,000 workers. It has routes nationwide but also to Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, among others, according to its website.
