On October 2, he was named honorary president of Real Madrid.

Amancio Amaro celebrates his first anniversary as Honorary President of Real Madrid. On October 16, 1939, one of our club’s greatest legends was born in La Coruña. He defended the shirt madridista for 14 seasons, from 1962 to 1976, winning 13 titles during this period: 1 European Cup, 9 Liga and 3 Spanish Cups. One of his brightest moments of his career during the final of the Fridayby scoring Real Madrid’s first goal once morest Partizan with a marvelous action, where he got rid of his opponent to beat the goalkeeper with a shot close to the post.

He was a benchmark for Real Madrid for more than a decade, appearing in 471 games and scoring 155 goals, becoming one of the best strikers in the world. He was also a key part of the Spanish selection which won Euro 1964. His influence at the club continued as a coach, he who won the championship of Second with Castilla in the 1983/84 season and was one of the men who started the Fifth of the Vulture.

Honorary president

Because of all his accomplishments with Real Madrid, he was unanimously elected on October 2 as honorary president of the club at the Extraordinary General Meeting. Amancio expressed his emotion as follows: “This nomination is an honor. My teammates and friends Alfredo Di Stéfano and Paco Gento were my predecessors and it is an honor to receive this charge. In front of any name there is the team, it’s the greatness of this club. It’s the icing on the cake of my career”.
