In the world of 3D printing where innovation is endless, AM Stream The organization stands out as a pioneering organization that is reshaping the future of manufacturing. Their mission is ambitious: to transform the industry by making 3D printing both affordable and fully automated, enabling mass customization and local production. Stephen’s RinkAs Sales Director at AM-Flow, we delved into the heart of their business and explored how they contribute to the groundbreaking 3DoP (3D Printing Optimized Production) project.

AM-Flow: Groundbreaking 3D Printing Automation

AM-Flow is not your typical player in the 3D printing space. They specialize in providing automation solutions for 3D printing factories with the ambition to make 3D printing accessible and cost-effective for customized and local production. The driving force behind their mission is to move away from mass production to highly customized, locally manufactured products while maintaining competitive pricing and quality.

Rink describes how their approach solves material waste and logistical complexity because their system relies on transmitting digital data rather than shipping physical products. The result is a shift from a world dominated by mass-produced, cookie-cutter products to one where customers can receive customized products that are exactly what they want.

The Birth of AM-Flow: A Solution-Driven Journey

AM-Flow was born out of real-world challenges Stefan Rink observed during his time at a 3D printing service provider. While the digital design and printing process was amazing, the reality once the print was complete was not. It became clear that despite advanced technology and ample investment, the post-printing process was still labor intensive and required complex manual intervention.

Curiosity led Rink to invite renowned automation experts to solve the problem. However, the shapes and materials vary widely and are often mixed together, making it very complex, difficult to automate and posing a huge challenge. It wasn’t until Rink teamed up with a group of mathematicians and software developers in Amsterdam that real progress was made.

2018 was the year AM-Flow was officially founded, and their journey to revolutionize 3D printing automation officially began. With three different locations in Amsterdam for software development, artificial intelligence (AI), mathematics, and mechatronics and operations, and in Eindhoven, AM-Flow is poised to make a big impact.

AM-Flow’s unique approach

What makes AM-Flow unique is its way of thinking and the deep integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into its solutions. While many automation companies focus on standardizing production processes, AM-Flow takes a different perspective. They acknowledge that full automation of a production process is usually not feasible, but they can make a difference. When you start looking at all processes in this way, you start to solve problems differently.

Rink emphasizes that they are not looking to fully automate every process, but rather to help their customers automate as much as possible. Their expertise lies in identifying which aspects of production can be automated while accepting the reality of industry diversity.

Their investment in AI plays a key role in identifying and maintaining quality in this complex environment. This approach sets AM-Flow apart from its competitors as it not only integrates AI but also adopts a mindset that views automation as an adaptive solution rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Smart Factory of the Future: AM-Flow’s Contribution to 3DoP

AM-Flow participated in the 3DoP project out of the belief that it could accelerate their development and bring their innovations to market faster. The multidisciplinary nature of the project, the collaboration with Fieldlab partners for real-world testing, and the financial support provided an ideal environment for AM-Flow’s development.

They see the 3DoP project as a tool to achieve significant advancements in their product portfolio. Rink envisions bringing their innovations to a global audience through this initiative. Collaboration with like-minded partners and financial support from the project creates shared risk and the opportunity to attract venture capital for further expansion.

One of the most noteworthy milestones of AM-Flow is the successful fully automated processing of more than one million parts

Milestone Journey

AM-Flow is actively involved in Work Packages 4 and 5 of the 3DoP project, which are developing an “Automated, dedicated AM line for the production of affordable 3D printed dental implants and aligners” and an “Automated, modular AM line for the production of high-mix, high-volume polymer and metal 3D printed parts” respectively. In these projects, the company will help achieve several milestones, such as quality inspection algorithms, vision modules, dental grippers and robotic cells, dental flipping modules, integration of AM-Logic software with factory software in WP4, and production of high-mix test parts in WP5, improvements to the bin picking robotic cell/AM sorting/AM routing, development of a part flipping cell and inline quality control unit, quality control software and a fully integrated modular AM line.

AM-Flow has achieved several milestones in its journey through the 3DoP project. The most notable of these is the successful and fully automated processing of over one million parts. This achievement not only demonstrates their capabilities, but also reflects the growing adoption of automation in the industry.

Rink acknowledges the critical role played by customers, who are increasingly adopting automation to improve production processes. These collaborative efforts have resulted in significant growth for AM-Flow and a bright future for the 3D printing industry.

The future of AM-Flow 3D printing

As AM-Flow continues to lead the way in 3D printing automation, their impact on the industry is undeniable. With a unique way of thinking, deep AI integration, and a commitment to adaptability, they are poised to reshape the future of manufacturing.

Their participation in the 3DoP project not only accelerates their growth, but also contributes to the broader goal of promoting innovation and automation in the 3D printing industry. The road ahead promises to enable greater customization, reduce waste, and revolutionize the way we produce and consume goods.

AM-Flow’s journey is an inspiring testament to what can be achieved when innovation and determination meet, and the 3DoP project is a key chapter in their ongoing success story. As they continue to push the limits of 3D printing, one can only imagine the transformative impact they will have on global industries.
