Alzheimer’s: research update

2023-09-15 10:21:47

As September 21 approaches, World Alzheimer’s Day, the Vaincre Alzheimer Foundation presents its very first report on medical research specializing in Alzheimer’s disease. This report provides an overview of international and French fundamental and clinical research. It also takes stock of validated drug treatments currently in clinical trials.

International research on Alzheimer’s disease focuses on bothstudy of 7 major categories of research avenues to better understand pathologybut also on the development of drug treatments. In 2023, more than 140 drug candidates are under development, with an emphasis on “disease-modifier” treatments (which aim to modify the course of the disease), including two immunotherapies that offer hope.
Furthermore, the search for biomarkers for earlier diagnosis is also booming, thanks to the use of innovative technologies.

For his part, French research is very active, with excellent research laboratories and an strong and unique clinical research infrastructure in Europe. But it faces several challenges: financing, human resources, administrative constraints, lack of a national plan dedicated to the disease.

To date, there is still no treatment to completely cure Alzheimer’s disease., that is to say, to stop its evolution. Research must focus on various therapeutic targets to develop a multitherapy approach to better treat this multifactorial disease.
This is why it is essential to continue investing massively in research and promote collaboration between teams, in France and around the world.

In the space of 10 years, The Vaincre Alzheimer Foundation has contributed to the greatest advances in research against the disease including: the identification of new genetic risk factors, the design of pro-cognitive drug candidates and the use of a molecule homologous to caffeine with neuroprotective powers.
