Alytus plans to connect the two squares in the center

Arūnas Grigaitis, the chief specialist of the Architecture, Urban Planning and Land Management Department of the Alytus municipality, told BNS that the municipality’s goal is to connect two nearby non-functional squares.

“Fix the square, fix the passageways, make green areas, basically so that the square is attractive to the residents. The idea is to combine the two squares – one is in front of the municipal theater and the other, where the bus station is located by the Nemunas, and make one pedestrian path not crossed by Darius and Girėnos streets,” he said.

“Now it is simply dysfunctional, you go out at eight or nine in the evening and see how everything looks – a dead square. There is no life in it, nothing happens, it is not interesting, there is no place for events, if there is an event, it sets the stage, but clutters the entrance, in other words, it is not suitable for anyone. (…) Even the square would be difficult to name, because it is basically a wide pedestrian street”, said A. Grigaitis.

According to A. Grigaitis, it is not yet clear how much such maintenance of the square could cost, and the main goal now is to anticipate the work.

“Almost 40,000 is allocated for the planning of the competition alone. euros, and (for the installation of the square – BNS) I have no idea. Here it depends not on who will win, but with what offers. There can be 3 million here. euros, and 30 million euros,” he said.

“There will be a competent commission that will select the winner of the competition, (…) a program will be prepared, now a competition for the organization service has been announced. Once we have an organizer, then the actual program will be put together. (…) There is no goal to reorganize everything in one fell swoop – the goal is to prepare an action plan for, say, ten years ahead in order to reorganize everything consistently,” said A. Grigaitis.

According to him, the structure of the square has been preserved since the Soviet era, and cosmetic repairs were last carried out eight years ago.
